#NGIYIMPUMALANGA
#NgiyiMpumalanga Icons celebrates five remarkable South Africans whose lives, achievements and legacies have helped shape Mpumalanga and South Africa.
The campaign honours Dr Mathews Phosa, Dr Rebecca Malope, Dr Esther Mahlangu, Ray Phiri and Hugh Masekela, recognising their extraordinary contributions to leadership, music, art, culture and public life.
From Dr Mathews Phosa, a prominent figure in the history of Mpumalanga and South Africa’s democratic transition, to Dr Esther Mahlangu, whose distinctive Ndebele art has taken Mpumalanga’s cultural heritage to audiences around the world, each of these icons has made a lasting contribution.
Dr Rebecca Malope’s extraordinary gospel career, Ray Phiri’s influence on South African music, and Hugh Masekela’s internationally celebrated musical legacy each represent an important part of our country’s cultural story.
#NgiyiMpumalanga Icons is about celebrating achievement, recognising heritage and remembering the people whose talent, creativity, leadership and contribution have helped shape who we are.
During Heritage Month 2026, RISE fm celebrates these five icons and the enduring legacy they have created for generations of South Africans.
