Awqaf South Africa is launching the book of the monumental work by Dr. Selim Argun – called “Elite configurations and the clusters of power, the ulema, waqf and the Ottoman state 1789 -1839.” Dr. Selim Argun is an Associate Professor and lecturer in the Faculty of Theology in the Department of History of Islam at Istanbul University. He is a specialist in the field of Awqaf. Argun graduated from the Islamic University of Medina with a BA and completed an MA at the University of Johannesburg before completing his PhD from McGill University, Montreal, Canada. During his PhD he taught at the Institute of Islamic Studies. Dr. Argun has a special focus on Waqf, Ottoman History, History of Islamic Civilization, Institutions and Africa. Selim has written on many subjects including a treatise on “The life and contribution of the Osmanli scholar, Abu Bakr Effendi: towards Islamic thought and culture in South Africa”.
