She was South Africa's first female newspaper editor - at the Mail and Guardian and now at City Press. She has been rated as one of the 500 most influential Muslims in the world by the Royal Strategic Centre in Jordan, and has been at the forefront of meaningful journalism in post-apartheid South Africa. As an editor who has allowed truth to be spoken to power, sometimes under trying circumstances, she is now in line to receive the esteemed International Press Freedom Award. This honour has been bestowed upon her by the US-based Committee to Protect Journalists.
