South African President Jacob Zuma appointed Lesetja Kganyago as new central bank governor today, replacing the respected Gill Marcus, whose five-year term ends on November 8. Analysts surveyed by Reuters had predicted Kganyago, a deputy governor who has also served as Director General at the finance ministry, would get the post, ahead of fellow deputy governor Daniel Mminele. Kganyago is the former director-general of the National Treasury who joined the Reserve Bank as a deputy governor in 2011. Kganyago, 48, will take office on November 9, Zuma told reporters today in the capital, Pretoria.
