As of 2022, the Western Cape Organics Landfill Ban comes into effect. This means that municipalities will be required to divert 50% of the estimated 3 million tonnes of organic waste generated in the province every year from landfills. And that figure increases to a 100% diversion by 2027. The idea is to prevent organic waste from slowly decomposing on landfills where it produces methane – a potent greenhouse gas that has reportedly contributed to about 30% of the rise in global temperatures since the Industrial Revolution. In this week’s edition of Being Green, Glynis Crook speaks to Alderman Xanthea Limberg, Mayoral Committee Member for Water and Waste for the City of Cape Town, to find out if plans for the city are in place.
