At roughly the halfway mark of the season, it is the reigning champions of The Bundesliga, Bayern Munich, who will be heading into the December break at the top of the table with 37 points. Their fiercest rivals in Borussia Dortmund are currently in second place, with 31 points. Bayern extended this gap this past weekend after a 2-1 victory over Mainz, whereas Dortmund drew 1-1 with newly-promoted Bochum. That game was dominated by Dortmund, but it was Erling Haaland who provided the assist for a Julian Brandt goal in the 85th minute that secured a singular point for Dortmund. During the match, Dortmund came under the subject of Schadenfreude (a German word meaning “finding joy in others despise”) from the Bochum fans, after they were celebrating getting a point against Dortmund, and allowing Bayern to extend their lead at the top of the table.
Bayern Munich continued their fine form against Mainz, thanks to goals by Kingsley Coman and Jamal Musiala.
