It was in the month of September of the year 1962 when Gideon Nxumalo recorded his Jazz Fantasia in the Wits Great Hall.

Sixty years on, Wits Music alumnus and jazz pianist Mdu Mtshali recreates a performance of this classic South African jazz work in his own arrangement for piano, bass, drums, sax, voice, and two special guests on horns.

Mdu, is a highly acclaimed South Africa’s pianist/composer/producer and arranger who originates from Kwa-Thema, Ekurhuleni east of Johannesburg.

He joins us to chat more about this tribute.
