It is fishing season and Quota's for both Abalone and Crayfish have been advertised. To understand the legal recourse on what is acceptable. On Monday morning we heard Ashley a caller, who attended the recent Seafood and Crayfish Festival in Paternoster.
He said that local fishermen were openly selling crayfish and so they decided to buy some to take home and prepare. What took them by surprise was a roadblock, where the crayfish was discovered and led to a hefty fine.Ashley felt this was unfair on many levels - such as not targeting those selling the crayfish. To get an explanation on what is permissible and what is not, we asked Lionel Adendorf to join us. Adendorf is the spokesperson for the Fisheries Division in the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.
