At least 500 people in Saskatoon don’t have a place to call home.

We see them every day … some pushing carts with everything they own inside, others huddled up on the bare concrete, covered in donated blankets.

There are “couch surfers” or those who try to find any abandoned space they can — like a shed or an empty home — to get out of the cold.

Many have addictions or mental health issues or suffer from intergenerational traumas.

Some people are able to get help and support, while others don’t see their situation changing anytime soon.

Over the last six months, Senior Reporter Lara Fominoff received special permission from the Saskatoon Tribal Council, downtown Emergency Wellness Centre staff, and organizers of the Saskatoon Warming Bus to speak with several people who currently or very recently considered themselves homeless.
