Free Book Friday: The Texture of Shadows
In our Free Book Friday segment today, we explore a novel called The Texture of Shadows by Mandla Langa. The Texture of Shadows is set at the turn of the decade 1989-90, a highpoint of hope in South Africa's political history. The central plot concerns the return of a band of exiled Umkhonto we Sizwe soldiers to South Africa in 1989.
The author Mandla Langa is a political activist, who joined Umkhonto we Sizwe. He received his training in Angola, and subsequently moved all over Africa, occupying various ANC posts during this period. In 1991, Langa was the first South African to be awarded the Arts Council of Great Britain Bursary for creative writing. In exile, Langa obtained a journalism diploma in Hungary and London. Since the country’s transition to democracy, Langa has held various prominent positions in the media industry. He was a weekly columnist for the Sunday Independent and also served on the board of the SABC, having initially been the programme director for television at the broadcaster.
Mandla Langa is our guest this afternoon….
We chat to Ali Al-Ahmed, a Saudi scholar and expert on Saudi political affairs and the al-Saud family history. He has authored reports on Saudi Arabia regarding religious freedom, torture, press freedom, and religion. He is currently based at the Institute for Gulf Affairs in Washington, US
