Painfully Close: The 1999 Rugby World Springboks

South Africa came painfully close to winning the 1999 Rugby World Cup. The Springboks were eliminated in extra time in their semi-final against Australia, who would go on to win the tournament. In this Front Row Rugby video Peter looks back at the event and analyses the less than ideal buildup to the tournament, the sensational dropping of captain Gary Teichmann and the players feeling uncomfortable in Scotland. From there they moved to France for a memorable quarter-final win over England in which Jannie De Beer slotted a world record five drop goals before that fateful semi-final. The Boks would regroup to defeat arch enemy New Zealand in the third/fourth-place play-off to secure third place and a bronze medal.
