We've all seen the "zero sugar" options of beverages and food items. They use artificial sweeteners like Aspartame, Xylitol, Sorbitol, Sucralose etc. that give food or drinks a sweeter taste without using normal sugar. Many people who are sugar conscious consume these in the hope of reducing their sugar intake. Why do they taste so intensely sweet? And why is there a big health debate about them? On one hand, most health authorities consider them safe, and many people use them to reduce their sugar intake and lose weight. On the other hand, they're claimed by some studies to increase your risk of cancer and harm your blood sugar and gut health.
