The South African government has received the remains of 49 liberation fighters who died in exile in Zimbabwe and Zambia. The remains were received at the Waterkloof Airforce Base on an emotional Wednesday evening (25 September 2024) for families of the fallen freedom fighters. Phemelo speaks to Ministry of Defence and Military Veterans, Onicca Kwakwa and Todd Matshikiza’s daughter, Marian Matshikiza. Todd Matshikiza composed the music for King Kong, the all-black musical that became a global hit. He was famed for composing jazz music and writing for Drum magazine at the height of apartheid. He moved with his family to Lusaka in 1964, where he died four years later after a short illness and was buried.
