Renting out chickens - an idea we could use?

Egg prices in the USA have gone through the roof in the last few months. It's forced Americans to get creative in how they save money - including companies now renting out chickens so people could have a hen lay eggs for them instead of buying in the shop. Would this idea work in South Africa?
