IN CONVERSATION WITH Palesa Yates (ACDP councillor)

The African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) in Ekurhuleni has expressed shock over the Gauteng provincial government's failure to pay R382.3 million owed to the municipality for water and electricity services.
ACDP councillor Palesa Yates revealed that R41.1 million of the debt has been outstanding for more than three months. “The ACDP recently submitted a question in council about the matter and was stunned to learn that various departments within the provincial government owe the City of Ekurhuleni hundreds of millions,” said Yates.
She urged the Gauteng government to settle its municipal accounts promptly, warning that late payments undermine good governance. “When government departments don’t pay their bills on time, it sends a terrible message to residents, many of whom face disconnection for non-payment,” Yates said. “Government cannot expect special treatment while ordinary citizens face consequences.”
