In conversation with Professor Benjamin Rosman : Advancing AI and Robotics for Africa’s Future

Professor Benjamin Rosman is a prominent academic and
researcher in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) and
robotics, currently serving as a Full Professor at the
University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South
Africa. He holds a position in the School of Computer
Science and Applied Mathematics, where he leads the
Robotics, Autonomous Intelligence and Learning (RAIL)
Laboratory. His research is deeply rooted in exploring the
intersection of AI, machine learning, and robotics, focusing
on lifelong reinforcement learning, decision-making, and the
development of autonomous systems capable of adapting to
complex and dynamic environments. Professor Rosman is
also the Director of the National E-Science Postgraduate
Teaching and Training Platform (NEPTTP), a key initiative
aimed at cultivating the next generation of African scientists
in data science and AI. He has made significant contributions
to the field by applying AI techniques to a variety of
real-world problems, from robotics to computational
neuroscience.

In addition to his academic achievements, Professor Rosman
is an influential figure in Africa’s growing AI landscape. As
the Chief Science Officer of Lelapa AI, a company that builds
AI solutions specifically designed for African contexts, he
works to ensure that AI technologies can be developed and
deployed locally to solve the continent’s unique challenges.
Professor Rosman is also a co-founder of the Deep Learning
Indaba, an annual machine learning summer school that
brings together AI experts from across Africa to share
knowledge, collaborate, and build a sustainable AI research
community on the continent. His leadership and vision have
earned him recognition as a CIFAR-Azrieli Global Scholar by
the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research, further
cementing his role as a leader in the global AI community.
Through his work, Professor Rosman strives to bridge the
gap between cutting-edge AI research and practical
applications that can transform African societies, ensuring
that the continent plays a central role in the future of
technology and innovation.
