Mvelo Hadebe was joined by Nofezile Jali, a Peer Helper from the MUT Student Counselling Unit, for an insightful discussion on the importance of mental health.
Nofezile began by defining mental health and stressing the need to raise awareness in order to break the stigma and promote a culture of support. She pointed out common signs that someone may be struggling, including social withdrawal, noticeable changes in behavior, and mood swings.
She also shared practical ways to support those facing mental health challenges, highlighting the importance of listening without judgment, showing empathy, and encouraging individuals to seek professional help. Students were reminded of the various support systems available to them, including the MUT Student Counselling Unit and external organizations like SADAG. Peer Helpers are also accessible for guidance and referrals.
