IN CONVERSATION WITH DR MAKHUBELA

President Cyril Ramaphosa is preparing to meet with former U.S. President
Donald Trump, who recently confirmed he will be hosting a South African
delegation led by Ramaphosa next week. The meeting comes at a sensitive
diplomatic moment, following the U.S. administration's controversial decision
to grant refugee status to 49 white South Africans, citing claims of racial
discrimination and genocide. The South African government has strongly
dismissed these claims as misinformation, describing them as politically
motivated and unsubstantiated.
Trump, known for his confrontational style and unpredictable tactics, may be
armed with distorted narratives and could use the platform to publicly
challenge or ridicule the South African delegation. Mngomezulu pointed to
Trump’s past interactions with other world leaders, including Ukraine's
President Zelenskyy, as cautionary examples of how Trump can dominate
diplomatic exchanges for political spectacle.
He also noted the irony that Ramaphosa has previously responded swiftly to
American political controversies and now finds himself on the receiving end.
Mngomezulu advises that Ramaphosa and his advisors thoroughly prepare for
any eventuality in order to protect South Africa’s image and avoid being
politically undermined on an international stage.
The meeting is likely to draw attention both at home and abroad, as it touches
on sensitive issues of race, diplomacy, misinformation, and bilateral relations.
