wo prominent civil society organisations—AfriForum and Forum for South Africa (FOSA)—have slammed the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and the South African Police Service (SAPS) for their handling of a rape case involving a seven-year-old girl, known publicly as Cwecwe, in Matatiele, Eastern Cape.
Earlier this week, the NPA confirmed that no one would be prosecuted in the case, citing a lack of sufficient evidence. The incident allegedly occurred on the premises of Bergview Primary School in October last year, sparking widespread national outrage and protests demanding justice.
Both AfriForum and FOSA have rejected the NPA’s rationale and raised serious concerns over how the investigation was handled.
