IN CONVERSATION WITH HENDRICK MAKANETA, EDUCATION ACTIVIST.

Loading player...
Education activist Hendrick Makaneta has urged universities to deal with what he calls chaos disguised as celebrations during graduation ceremonies.
This is graduation season at various universities. Makaneta says the waving of knobkerries and assegais on stage is a safety risk and delays the ceremonies.
He supports cultural pride but insists that traditions must not disrupt proceedings or endanger the lives of others.
“We really want to acknowledge the importance of cultural heritage and traditional practices in our communities. However, we must consider the potential impact of these actions on others. If you are dancing on stage and portraying your cultural practices, you are not the only one who’s graduating. You are taking time for the next graduate who is not concerned about your cultural dance.
