Every June, South Africa observes National Blood Donor Month—a time dedicated to honoring the everyday heroes who roll up their sleeves to donate blood, and to encouraging more people to do the same. Spearheaded by the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) and the Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS), this national campaign highlights the life-saving power of a single blood donation and the ongoing need to maintain a stable blood supply.
June is a critical time for blood donation in South Africa. With the arrival of winter, blood donations typically drop due to illness, cold weather, and logistical challenges. Yet, the demand for blood never slows down. Thousands of patients—those undergoing surgery, accident victims, cancer patients, and individuals with chronic conditions—depend on donated blood every day.
To address this seasonal shortfall, National Blood Donor Month rallies existing donors and welcomes new ones to step forward. The message is simple but urgent: Your blood can save a life.
The month also includes World Blood Donor Day, celebrated globally on June 14. This annual event, established by the World Health Organization, recognizes voluntary blood donors and promotes the importance of regular, unpaid blood donations. In 2024, the theme was “20 Years of Celebrating Giving: Thank You Blood Donors!”, marking two decades of global gratitude and advocacy.
