CelebritiesMatthew Lani sues Gauteng education department for R2.5m over ‘bogus doctor’ claims
Matthew Bongani Lani, a controversial social media figure, is suing the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) for R2.5 million, claiming its public statement falsely labeled him a "bogus doctor." He argues the statement was defamatory, damaging to his reputation, and harmed his mental well-being.
The lawsuit, filed in the Johannesburg High Court, states the media release was widely circulated—seen over 1.4 million times on X (formerly Twitter) and republished by major news outlets, leading to public ridicule, harassment, and lost professional opportunities.
Although Lani was arrested in 2023, the National Prosecuting Authority dropped the case in 2024 due to a lack of evidence. He claims the GDE violated his constitutional rights to dignity and privacy, especially by including personal information about his education and mental health.
He also disputes the department’s claims about his education, saying he never attended Fourways Adult Centre but was enrolled at a now-closed Cambridge school (CJ Education). He accuses the department of either malice or gross negligence in publishing unverified information and says the damage to his reputation is ongoing.
