Emergency services transported all the injured students to various hospitals for medical attention.
According to Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) spokesperson Xolani Fihla, the incident occurred on Westpark Drive and involved a white Toyota Quantum operating as a scholar transport vehicle.
Preliminary investigations reveal that the driver of the minibus was allegedly attempting to overtake another vehicle when he lost control, resulting in the crash. Further tests confirmed that the driver was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident.
“The driver will be detained at Sophiatown SAPS and is facing charges of reckless and negligent driving, as well as driving under the influence,” Fihla confirmed.
