The Wits Tang Soo Do Club has proudly made history after
four of its athletes showcased their skill and resilience at the
Tang Soo Do World Championships, held from 8–10 August
2025 in Inverness, Scotland. Out of a total of 11 qualifiers,
funding constraints allowed only four
representatives—Thomas Jr Mbombi, Steve Madiala
Leputu, Treyen Pillay, and Michael Naidoo—to compete on
the global stage. Their performances proved nothing short
of exceptional, with each athlete bringing home multiple
medals, including gold in various categories such as open
hand forms, weapon forms, and point sparring. Collectively,
the team secured a remarkable tally of gold, silver, and
bronze medals, a testament to their discipline, dedication,
and world-class ability. Under the guidance of Master
Gregory Hart and the leadership of Chairperson Lethabo
Rabothata, the club’s achievements mark an important
milestone, being its first international competition since the
pandemic. Tang Soo Do, a traditional Korean martial art
blending striking, defensive techniques, and character
development, remains a cornerstone of Wits’ sporting
culture. These victories not only highlight the club’s proud
heritage but also reaffirm its position as a force within the
South African and international martial arts community.
