Raising Boys, Restoring Values: The Character Company’s Fight Against Fatherlessness

In this heartfelt conversation, Sam Marshall sits down with Jaco van Schalkwyk, founder and CEO of The Character Company, an organization dedicated to mentoring South Africa’s fatherless boys through values-based guidance. Since 2012, they’ve reached over 1,100 boys with nearly 10,000 hours of one-on-one mentorship building courage, kindness, respect, self-discipline, and honesty.

Jaco shares his personal journey of growing up without a father, how that pain became his purpose, and why South Africa’s crisis of fatherlessness is at the root of many of the nation’s struggles from broken families to gender-based violence.

This episode is a call to action: for fathers to be present, for men to step up as role models, and for communities to return to the “village” spirit of raising children together. Discover how mentorship changes lives and how you, too, can be part of the solution.
