Lerato Moloi is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of
Lawyers for the Arts South Africa (LASA), a non-profit
organization dedicated to providing legal support, advocacy,
and education for artists and creatives nationwide. With over
15 years of experience in the film and media industry, Lerato
combines her creative expertise with a robust legal
foundation to address systemic challenges faced by the arts
sector. She holds diplomas in Media Studies with a double
major in Television Production and Advertising, and in Radio
Broadcasting, and later completed her Bachelor of Laws
(LLB) degree. Lerato is currently advancing her expertise
through a Postgraduate Diploma in Risk Management and
an Intellectual Property Management course offered by
WIPO in partnership with Mangosuthu University of
Technology.
Lerato’s commitment to legal advocacy was sparked by
personal experiences of injustice within the creative sector,
motivating her to create pathways for protection and
empowerment for artists. Under her leadership, LASA has
forged strategic partnerships with top-tier law firms and
institutions, delivering pro bono legal services and
workshops on intellectual property, contracts, and business
law to hundreds of creatives nationwide. Lerato is pursuing
pupillage to specialise in intellectual property, constitutionallaw, human rights, and labour rights within the creative
economy, with a long-term vision of establishing a legal aid
division and registered law clinic dedicated to supporting
South Africa’s creative industry. Her work continues to
influence policy, build capacity, and drive meaningful reform
at the intersection of law and the arts.
