At least R34 million a year, roughly $1.96 million is being spent on the protection of state prosecutors in South Africa, a figure disclosed by the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security (JCPS) cluster during a media roundtable in Houghton.
During the briefing, the cluster highlighted the annual cost and framed it within broader security concerns. The safety of prosecutors, along with investigators and whistle-blowers, was discussed as part of the cluster’s mandate to protect those involved in the justice process, and the media roundtable outlined the measures and coordination in place to respond to credible threats.
