Madlanga Commision Daily summary:
Day 6 (25 September):Major-General Petronella van Rooyen testified on the legality of Minister Mchunu’s decision to disband the PKTT, stating that the minister overstepped his authority and that no member of the police may obey a manifestly illegal order. She emphasised that the closure of the task team fell outside the minister’s mandate and outlined the appropriate constitutional and operational processes that should have been followed.

Day 7 (26 September): KZN Director of Public Prosecutions Adv Elaine Harrison described the PKTT as an essential structure for prosecuting politically motivated crimes and expressed concern that the disbandment had not been formally communicated to her office. She highlighted the potential risks ahead of the 2026 local government elections and explained operational decisions made to transfer political cases to the NPA’s Organised Crime Component due to resource constraints.

Day 8 (29 September): The commission addressed claims of internal divisions and distractions, reaffirming its commitment to investigating the alleged unlawful disbandment of the PKTT and related issues. The proceedings underscored the importance of maintaining focus on the core objectives of the inquiry.

Day 9 (30 September): The commission continued its hearings, with further testimonies expected to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the disbandment of the PKTT and its implications for law enforcement and justice in South Africa.
