A week ago violent protests broke out at the University of Fort Hare in the Eastern Cape. Students took to the streets and allegedly set fire to multiple buildings six to seven structures were reported torched which housed critical assets such as exam papers, research materials, and institutional archives. The university was forced to suspend its academic programme temporarily, and calls quickly grew among student factions for the removal of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sakhela Buhlungu, whom protesters accused of mismanagement and failure of leadership. The damage was estimated in the range of R300 million to R500 million to restore campus infrastructure.
