With Westbury reeling from the shooting of seven teenagers, Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola is urging communities to break the silence on gang violence. Speaking at Sophiatown police station, Masemola confirmed fourteen suspects are being hunted in connection with the deaths of two youths, victims of a brutal shooting outside a known “lolly lounge,” a drug hangout for teens. While the suspects can’t be named due to their age, Masemola had a stark message: “You know who you are – we are looking for you. Surrender now.” The tragedy has reignited urgent calls for stronger community-police cooperation as trust issues deepen. Nzinga Qunta speaks to Joburg MMC for Public Safety, Dr. Mgcini Tshwaku, on what must change.
