The Congress of the People (COPE) notes with deep concern the shallow statement coming from leaders of the Government of National Unity (GNU), who seem content to exchange pleasantries while the country burns.
The outcomes of the recent GNU meeting fail to address the urgent and mounting challenges facing ordinary South Africans directly.
In the face of a growing trust deficit, citizens are disillusioned and disengaged, with their hopes rapidly fading. With the official unemployment rate standing at 33.2% in Q2 2025 and the expanded measure at 42.9%, some 8.4 million South Africans remain jobless. Meanwhile, an estimated 63% of the population lives in poverty under upper-middle-income thresholds, over 39 million people struggling daily to survive.
