IN CONVERSATION WITH REFILWE SEDITI

The North West province continues to be a wellspring of artistic excellence in
South Africa, and among its brightest stars shines Refilwe Sediti — a singer,
songwriter, actor, producer, and entrepreneur whose creative journey
bridges music, theatre, and film.

Born in Kanana, near Klerksdorp, Refilwe’s love affair with performance
began in childhood. From church choirs to local talent shows, she was always
the girl with the biggest voice and the boldest dreams.

> “I knew from the get-go that I was an artist,” she laughs. “My mom says I
used to belt out Drew Hill’s Somebody’s Sleeping in My Bed* as a toddler —
totally inappropriate, but I was passionate!”
That passion became purpose. While still a teenager, Refilwe recorded her
debut album, Lyrics of a Teenager — a heartfelt body of work that earned
her a SAMRO Music Award nomination** for *Best Inspiring Song*. The
album introduced her smooth, soulful tone and powerful storytelling to
audiences across the country.
Refilwe’s stage presence soon caught the attention of theatre directors,
leading her to perform in the Broadway musical Sarafina! and later in
productions at the State Theatre and Market Theatre. These experiences
cemented her reputation as a dynamic live performer.
Throughout her journey, she has been guided by some of South Africa’s most
respected industry veterans, including Mbongeni Ngema, Nomonde Mbusi,
and Baby Cele.
> “Mam’ Nomonde and Baby Cele showed me that grace and power can
coexist,” Refilwe says. “They taught me that art is about truth — not
pretending, but *being”
Her work ethic and commitment to growth saw her performing across
different platforms — from political events to national TV shows — always
using her artistry to inspire and empower.

In an industry where many creatives struggle to protect their work, Refilwe
learned early the importance of ownership.

> “I once saw my idea on TV, produced by someone else. That was my
wake-up call,” she recalls. “You either complain about the system, or you
build your own.”

That mindset led to the founding of Sediti Studios, her own production
company dedicated to nurturing young African creatives and telling authentic
stories through film, theatre, and digital media. The studio also produces her
popular YouTube talk show No FOMO and other entertainment projects.

She is currently studying Film and TV Production, sharpening her skills behind
the camera and learning the business side of entertainment.

> “Too many artists are famous but broke. I want to know the contracts, the
budgets, the red flags — I want to own my art.”

While her business ventures grow, music remains her heartbeat. Refilwe has
shared stages with celebrated names like Big Zulu, Mr Malungelo, and
Mthandazo Gatya, with whom she recently released her second single
“Hamba” — a soulful collaboration that continues to climb the airwaves.

She is signed to Jury Records, a Johannesburg-based label founded by Juluca
Michael Motlhoki, who was captivated by her voice and immediately
welcomed her to the label. Her debut single under Jury Records, My Heart
featuring DJ Desh, reaffirmed her position as one of South Africa’s most
inspiring vocalists.

> “The mic and the studio have called again,” she says. “I’m here to tell
stories that heal, uplift, and remind people that love still matters.”
Refilwe’s journey hasn’t been without challenges. As a woman navigating the

entertainment landscape, she has faced moments where integrity was tested
— but she refused to compromise her values.
> “I’ve lost opportunities because I said no. But I’ll never regret it. God
didn’t give me this gift for me to sell it cheap.”
She continues to advocate for young women to protect their artistry, stand
firm in their worth, and enter the industry with both heart and strategy.

As she completes her studies and expands Sediti Studios, Refilwe is diving
deeper into storytelling through film. She’s currently writing original
screenplays, developing new music,
