South Africa’s Electoral Commission is gearing up for the 2026 local government elections. The IEC has announced that the first voter registration weekend will take place on the 20th and 21st of June. While the exact election date is yet to be proclaimed by the Cooperative Governance Minister, the commission says preparations must be in place before municipal councils’ terms end in early November. Once the election date is announced, voters will still have until 5pm that day to register. Phemelo speaks to the IEC’s Deputy Chief Electoral Officer, Dr Victor Shale.
