
Joburg residents cheer army deployment

Scenes of relief and excitement unfolded in parts of Johannesburg as residents lined the streets, cheering on a convoy of soldiers deployed to tackle gang violence and gun crime. The South African National Defence Force rolled through Eldorado Park, Riverlea and Westbury in armoured vehicles, stopping at times for foot patrols alongside police. The deployment follows President Cyril Ramaphosa’s announcement that the army would assist SAPS in crime hotspots.
