Judy chats to South African singer/songwriter, Dave Starke, on the SA & Indie Music Zone.

Dave Starke is a South African singer-songwriter whose intimate, lyric-driven folk music places storytelling and raw emotion at its core. Rooted in a minimalist approach, his sound is built primarily around voice and acoustic guitar, what he describes as “nothing more than a wooden box with strings… fundamental, honest and often scary.” This philosophy mirrors his songwriting, which captures the vulnerability and complexity of the human experience.
Drawing on influences from folk, blues, country, and rock, Starke’s music explores themes of relationships, identity, personal change, and resilience. For him, songwriting is more than creative expression, it’s a survival strategy and a deeply personal emotional release. His second album reflects significant life transitions, including the ending and beginning of relationships and his decision to leave traditional employment to pursue music full-time.
Originally from Cape Town and later based in KwaZulu-Natal, Starke has over two decades of live performance experience.
With a focus on honesty over production, Dave Starke creates music that is both deeply personal and universally resonant.
