
Ramaphosa launches TRC housing reparations initiative

As South Africa marks 30 years since the first Truth and Reconciliation Commission hearings and prepares to commemorate Freedom Day - questions around justice, redress and unfinished business remain. This month, President Cyril Ramaphosa launched the TRC Housing Assistance Reparations Initiative in Ndwedwe, aimed at providing housing support to victims of apartheid identified through the TRC process. It’s a move framed as long-overdue implementation of the commission’s recommendations, but it also raises broader questions about how far the country has come in delivering meaningful freedom, particularly for those still living in poverty.
