In Conversation With Eleanore Spies MP DA Spokesperson on Public Service and Administration

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has called for urgent parliamentary intervention following revelations that nearly R800 million in public funds is spent annually on salaries for suspended government officials. According to reports, at least 674 officials across national and provincial departments are currently on suspension — many for periods far exceeding the prescribed 90-day limit.
This raises serious concerns about inefficiencies in disciplinary processes, as well as the potential misuse of suspensions as a bureaucratic loophole — either to delay accountability or quietly sideline officials without resolution.
Municipalities, already under financial strain, are particularly affected. With limited budgets meant for service delivery, funds are instead being directed toward individuals who are not actively contributing to governance. This has broader implications for service delivery failures, especially in communities already grappling with poor infrastructure, unreliable services, and administrative backlogs.
