CONTRALESA has publicly criticised aspects of the burial and memorial practice linked to American actress Gabrielle Union, after reports that she placed her father’s ashes beneath a vine tree she planted in 2022 as a personal act of remembrance.

In its response, CONTRALESA argued that the practice does not align with established cultural and ancestral burial traditions, describing it as “untraditional and unhistorical” within the South African cultural framework.
