On this episode of The Signal, we spotlight Johannesburg’s cultural heartbeat through theatre as the city marks Youth Month and the 50th anniversary of the Soweto Uprising (June 16, 1976).

We turn our focus to RISE ’76: The Story of June 16th, a powerful new production co-produced by The Market Theatre and The Baxter Theatre. The play honours the legacy of the Soweto Uprising while reflecting on its continued resonance in South Africa today.

Written and directed by award-winning playwright Tiisetso Mashifane wa Noni, the production sits at a historic intersection commemorating both the opening of The Market Theatre in 1976 and one of the most defining moments in the country’s liberation history.

This conversation explores memory, youth identity, protest, and the responsibility of storytelling in shaping how history is carried forward.
