On this episode of The Archive we are using this 50th anniversary of the June 16 Soweto Uprising to take a deep dive into the visual history of the liberation struggle to better understand the realities of South African youth today. Our conversation centers on the prominent 1976 at 50 exhibition currently showing at the Wits Art Museum, which brings together rare archival footage and photographs to bridge the gap between yesterday's activism and today's societal challenges.

To help us contextualise the present through the lens of the past, we are joined by legendary independent anti-apartheid filmmaker Kevin Harris, Known for his fierce commitment to truth-telling, Kevin was famously fired by the SABC in 1979 for refusing to censor his documentary exposing the brutal living conditions in Soweto, and went on to win the Golden Horn Lifetime Achievement Award for his massive contributions to South African cinema.

His vital historical documentary, Silent Witness, featuring intimate archival interviews with frontline leaders and affected families from 1976, is currently headlining the prominent 1976 at 50 exhibition at the Wits Art Museum.
