Another week, another scandal involving the Ekurhuleni Municipality,
Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department Chief Julius Mkhwanazi, alongside a Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department officer identified as Witness K, was arrested on Friday for allegedly stealing precious stones worth nearly R15 million in 2023.
The allegations stem from testimony heard before the Madlanga Commission. Witness K, who claimed to be Mkhwanazi’s former girlfriend, testified that she informed him about valuable gemstones being kept in an apartment in Killarney. She further alleged that Mkhwanazi was experiencing financial difficulties at the time and was looking for a way to make quick money.
According to her testimony, gemstones valued at almost R15 million were stolen but were later sold for just R110,000.
