IN CONVERSATION WITH WISANI BALOYI

South Africa is producing enough food to feed its
population, yet millions of people continue to struggle to
put nutritious meals on the table. With food prices
remaining high and hunger and malnutrition affecting
households across the country, the South African Human
Rights Commission has launched a national inquiry into
the country's food system. The inquiry is examining
whether South Africa is meeting its constitutional
obligation to ensure everyone has access to sufficient
food, while scrutinising the role of government,
producers, manufacturers and major retailers in shaping
food affordability and access. However, the hearings
have also raised questions about corporate
accountability, after several major industry players either
failed to appear or provided only limited information.
