The DA in Gauteng is raising alarm over what it describes as widespread corruption within the province’s traffic and metro police services. According to the party, 456 complaints involving fraud, corruption, extortion and theft were recorded between 2022 and 2026, with the Johannesburg Metro Police Department accounting for 185 cases and Tshwane Metro Police for 180.
The DA says only 175 officers, or 38.3% of those implicated, have been criminally charged. The party is also highlighting an alleged R1.5 million bribe involving a JMPD official in a single day, arguing that this points to a deeper problem of extortion and weak accountability within law enforcement.
The allegations are based on responses from Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi to questions posed by the DA
