We are five weeks away from officially electing Johannesburg’s next mayor in the 2026 Local Government Elections, a race filled with uncertainty and growing expectations for a new dawn in South Africa’s most important city.
Vuyolwethu (Vuyo) Zungula has been selected to contest the Johannesburg mayoral position under the African Transformation Movement. Zungula was a founding member of the party, which was established by a coalition of traditional leaders and church elders who wanted to create a political body that would advocate for marginalised South Africans, particularly those affected by unemployment and poverty.
At just 31, Zungula became one of the youngest people to lead a political party when he was appointed ATM president.
After his time as party president, the party described the change as a strategic move to separate party expansion duties from parliamentary responsibilities, allowing Zungula to dedicate 100% of his energy to legislative work. Today, he is aiming for one of Johannesburg’s most important office.
