GBV suspects on the run | Barry Bateman

The Private Prosecution Unit of AfriForum has taken up a number of cold cases in which the police have failed to trace or arrest or re-arrest known suspects. In this interview with Chris Steyn, the unit’s Barry Bateman, reveals details of some of those cases as well as the responses received from the Acting National Police Commissioner to questions from Advocate Gerrie Nel. In one of these cases, AfriForum points out that “for five years now, you've got a man who raped a woman, came back a week later and tried to murder her, and he's been on the run since then. This is somebody who I would say has the potential to continue doing that…” Responding to President Cyril Ramaphosa’s GBV 60-day case audit order, Bateman says with reference to the cases they have taken on: “We've put together the list. We've given it to the police, and their response on each one is, we've circulated and it's gone to the Tracing Team. It doesn't cut it. If that's the response that the SAPS or the authorities are gonna give to the President, well then we're not gonna change anything.”
