The National Youth Unemployment Movement (NYUM) notes the latest Quarterly Employment Statistics, which indicate that the number of employed persons decreased from 10.439 million in March 2026 to 10.425 million in June 2026 — a decline of approximately 14,000 employed persons.
While the numerical decline may appear modest, every job lost represents an individual whose income, livelihood and economic security may be affected. The figures reinforce the importance of sustained efforts to expand employment opportunities and improve access to the labour market.
NYUM is particularly concerned about the position of young people in South Africa. Young people continue to face significant barriers to entering and remaining in the labour market, including limited work experience, skills mismatches, insufficient opportunities and challenges in transitioning from education and training into sustainable employment.
