3 mayors in hot water, R30 petrol, and Ramaphosa sells a cow for R6.4 million

From the politically-paralysed Knysna Municipality to Nelson Mandela Bay, three mayors, former and current, have found themselves embroiled in cases, some before the courts, just weeks ahead of the elections. In Knysna, ex-mayor Thando Matika and a pair of senior municipal officials are currently languishing in a jail cell until their next court date. The trio’s been accused of graft in a dodgy R68-million security tender. Meanwhile, allegations of bribery are mounting against ex-Ngwathe mayor Victoria de Beer-Mthombeni and her husband, Mdlayedwa Mthombeni, who have been accused of extorting R8.3 million from three businesses that secured contracts with the council. And in Nelson Mandela Bay, mayor Babalwa Lobishe could have her personal belongings auctioned off all to pay off R80-thousand in legal costs emanating from her court challenge against a local political rival. Finally, how much would you fork out for a single cow? Well, president Cyril Ramaphosa is smiling all the way to the bank for selling his prized pregnant Ankole bovine over the weekend for R6.4-million.These, plus four other stories, make Unread your premier video bulletin in 10 minutes or less.
