The Right to Shelter Foundation of Namibia alleges that a confrontation following last week’s council meeting in Gobabis began when the Deputy Mayor approached a community member after the meeting had been adjourned.

According to the foundation, the Gobabis Mayor then instructed the Deputy Mayor, in Damara/Nama, to beat the community member, who had been seeking clarity on repeated adjournments of council meetings.

The foundation says the Mayor subsequently opened a police case against the community member, who also filed a case against the Mayor.

In S.A, the City of Cape Town has launched a specialised SWAT unit to respond rapidly to serious and high-risk crime. The unit will deal with incidents including gang violence, extortion and mass shootings. It’s equipped with an armoured vehicle, night-vision and heat-detection technology, as well as specialised firearms and tactical equipment. Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis says the unit will support communities when conventional policing resources are stretched:

The USS Abraham Lincoln is returning to Naval Air Station North Island in San Diego after 321 days at sea, marking the second-longest US aircraft carrier deployment since the end of the Cold War.

The carrier, carrying around 5,000 service members, had its deployment extended twice in the Middle East to support the war against Iran. Its return comes amid concerns over crew welfare after eight service members reportedly attempted suicide during the deployment, prompting calls for investigations into supply shortages and working conditions. Kate Fisher reports from Washington.
