Edumbe Community Church had a large number of people gathered as the KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Social Development, Ms Mbali Shinga, visited the area to commemorate World Food Day, which is celebrated globally on the 16th of October.
The commemoration was held under the theme "Innovate Today, Nourish Tomorrow" focusing on fighting hunger, promoting healthy eating and ensuring sustainable households.
Addressing the community, MEC Shinga said the Department cannot normalize hunger.
"We should not normalize hunger. We cannot accept a situation where a child goes to school hungry, or comes back from school worried about what they will eat. Keeping homes sustainable and ensuring that no family sleeps without food is our obligation as the Department," said MEC Shinga.
MEC Shinga urged the community of Ophuzane, under eDumbe Local Municipality, not to be overly dependent on government handouts but to empower themselves through self-reliance initiatives such as planting crops and other agricultural activities.
The event followed a visit by MEC Shinga to local community gardens where she handed over vegetable seedlings to support households and community food production.
The Department of Social Development will continue to work hand-in-hand with communities, municipalities and other stakeholders to address food security and promote sustainable livelihoods across KwaZulu-Natal.
