He became the SRC President at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in 2012 following a historic win at the institution by the DA Students Organisation (DASO).
Yusuf has served as the DA Youth Federal Chairperson since 2013. In 2014 he was elected as the youngest Member of Parliament in South African history and currently serves as the Deputy Shadow Minister of Higher Education and Training for the DA.
